*NSYNC fans have been saying “I Want You Back” since the popular boy band stopped recording together all the way back in 2001. After a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 12 when they presented an award to Taylor Swift, the group is fulfilling that wish.

The iconic quintet—which helped propel Justin Timberlake to superstardom—is releasing a new song called “Take You to a Better Place” on September 29. It will be featured in the upcoming animated movie Trolls Band Together, in which Timberlake returns to his leading role as Branch.

The unexpected reunion led to speculation the band could tour together, though member Joey Fatone said he has no knowledge of any plans and multiple sources speaking to Page Six completely dismissed the rumors. In any case, fans are thrilled to hear the group singing again.

So what took them so long? Well, turns out all five *NSYNC members—Timberlake, Fatone, Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick, and JC Chasez—have kept pretty busy with their own projects. Here’s what each one has been up to since the boy band said “Bye, Bye, Bye.”

Justin Timberlake

Timberlake, 42, never looked back after the release of his breakthrough solo album Justified in November 2002, amassing a net worth of around $250 million and becoming one of the world’s most recognizable pop stars. JT has 10 Grammy wins and five No. 1 hits, including “SexyBack,” “What Goes Around... Comes Around,” and “My Love” off his multiplatinum 2006 album FutureSex/LoveSounds.

His charisma as a singer carried over to the big screen as he landed roles in several blockbusters. The actor had an early part in Shrek the Third (2007) before starring in The Social Network (2010) and Friends with Benefits (2011), among others. His next movie, Trolls Band Together, releases on November 17 and marks the third movie in the franchise.

A shrewd businessman, Timberlake launched the William Rast clothing line in 2005 and has partnered with brands like Bai and Nike. Plus, the Memphis, Tennessee, native and his wife, actor Jessica Biel, are minority owners of the city’s NBA franchise, the Grizzlies. Timberlake and Biel are also parents to Silas, born in 2015, and Phineas, born in 2020.

Most recently, Timberlake collaborated with Timbaland and Nelly Furtado on the single “Keep Going Up” released earlier this month.

Joey Fatone

Other than Timberlake, 46-year-old Fatone has been the most visible *NSYNC member thanks to a number of movie and TV roles.

In 2007, he traded in his singing voice for dancing shoes on the fourth season of the reality competition Dancing With the Stars, placing second behind Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno. Fatone returned to the show for a special all-star season in 2012. He also appeared as the “Rabbit” character in the first season of the FOX show The Masked Singer.

Fatone has also had a variety of hosting roles, including on NBC’s The Singing Bee, the trivia game show Common Knowledge, and the Food Network competition Rewrapped.

Also an actor, Fatone has appeared as Cousin Angelo in each film of the My Big Fat Greek Wedding trilogy, starting with the original in 2002. The third installment is now in theaters.

Fatone’s personal life has also had its fair share of ups and downs. He married longtime girlfriend Kelly Baldwin in September 2004, and the couple had two children: daughters Briahna in 2001 and Kloey in 2010. However, Fatone announced in 2019 that the couple had filed for divorce and, a year later, confirmed it was finalized.

Lance Bass

Seeking another kind of out-of-this-world success, Bass trained to become an astronaut in 2002. According to Space.com, Bass, then 23, moved to Russia in an attempt to become the youngest person to ever fly to space. His seat on a flight to the International Space Station was allegedly paid for by unnamed Hollywood filmmakers and the subject of a documentary. However, the proposed documentary and his space journey fell through at the last minute.

Now 44, Bass has kept a pretty high profile on terra firma. In 2007, he released his autobiography Out of Sync, discussing his time with the band and struggles with his sexuality. Bass came out as gay in a 2006 cover story for People magazine.

Bass has appeared in a variety of movies and TV shows, including Zoolander (2001), I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (2007), and Tropic Thunder (2008). He also spent six months on Broadway, playing Corny Collins in Hairspray starting in August 2007.

In January 2023, Bass began hosting the Frosted Tips podcast with his husband, Michael Turchin. The show features interviews with a number of pop culture stars from the 1990s.

Chris Kirkpatrick

After *NSYNC, Kirkpatrick, now 51, started his own band called Nigels 11 and even dabbled in country music. In 2008, he appeared on the Country Music Television show Gone Country, with actors and musicians from other genres competing for the opportunity to record and release a country song. Kirkpatrick ultimately lost to Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach.

More recently, Kirkpatrick competed on the third season of Celebrity Big Brother in 2022 and, like Fatone, The Masked Singer, where he was revealed as “Hummingbird.”

In addition to being a pop star in real life, Kirkpatrick played one on a Nickelodeon children’s show. He lent his voice as Chip Skylark, the singer whose shiny teeth glistened just like a Christmas tree, in multiple appearances on The Fairly OddParents.

According to Today, Kirkpatrick and his wife Karly Skladany—who married in 2013—have one son, Nash, born in 2017.

JC Chasez

Chasez attempted a solo career as a singer but had minimal success. In 2004, he released his album Scizophrenic and performed as an opener for former Mickey Mouse Club castmate Britney Spears during her tour through the United Kingdom. He was set to release another album, The Story of Kate, in 2007, but the project fell apart to due his split with Jive Records.

The 47-year-old had more luck as a songwriter, penning songs for David Archuleta, Glee star Matthew Morrison, and—gasp—even the Backstreet Boys. He was also set to play Pontius Pilate in a North American arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, but The Tampa Bay Times reported that slow ticket sales led to its cancellation in 2014.

In January, he appeared on Bass’ Frosted Tips podcast to discuss his current projects, including a musical.
