Gov. Greg Abbott appointed a new Nueces County District Attorney last week following the resignation of District Attorney Mark Gonzalez.

Attorney James "Jimmy" Granberry, of Corpus Christi, will serve as district attorney of the 105th Judicial District in Nueces County, replacing Gonzalez, who announced he was stepping down last month.

Gonzalez resigned after entering the Democratic primary for a seat in the U.S. Senate. He is one of several Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Colin Allred and state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who hope to challenge U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.

Gonzalez was also facing a petition for his removal by local conservative activists alleging "incompetency, official misconduct, and failure to give bond."

Granberry will serve until the term expires on Dec. 31, 2024, or until a successor is duly elected and qualified.

Granberry is an attorney in private practice who previously served as an assistant district attorney and felony prosecutor in the Nueces County office from 1990 to 1994.

He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, a former member of a district grievance committee, a member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the founding president of the Coastal Bend Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, according to a Friday news release from Abbott's office.

Granberry has a bachelor's degree from Trinity University and a juris doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law.
