Nurses Picket Stanford Hospital on First Day of Strike
Nurses with the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California, went on strike on April 25 to demand better pay, better working conditions, and long-term alleviation of staffing shortages as a new union contract was being negotiated.
The strike was organized by the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA), a union that represents around 4,700 registered nurses at Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and is negotiating a new contract with Stanford Health Care.
“CRONA Nurses have been calling out the nurse shortage at Stanford and Packard hospitals throughout negotiations and are going on strike tomorrow to try and get the hospitals to LISTEN TO NURSES,” CRONA said via Facebook on April 24. “We have worked thousands of hours of overtime to keep the hospitals staffed and OVERTIME IS NOT A SUSTAINABLE STAFFING PLAN …. We call on the hospitals to invest in the loyal bedside CRONA Nurses who have kept the hospitals staffed before and throughout this pandemic.”
Stanford Health Care said that the hospitals will remain open and operational during the strike.
