NY hospital to pause baby deliveries after 30 staffers quit over vaccine mandate

A New York hospital will temporarily stop performing deliveries, as 30 of its employees quit due to the deadline for vaccine mandates.

Gerald Cayer, the CEO of Lewis County Health System, announced in a news conference on Sept. 10 that Lewis County General Hospital will temporarily halt baby deliveries beginning Sept. 24. Six of the 30 employees who had resigned worked in the maternity unit, with seven still employed but unsure if they will get vaccinated, according to NYTV7.

“If we can pause the service and now focus on recruiting nurses who are vaccinated, we will be able to reengage in delivering babies here in Lewis County,” said Cayer in his conference.

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Aug. 16 that all healthcare workers would need to get their first vaccine dose by Sept. 27.

Cayer said in his news conference that 464 of the hospital's employees, roughly 73% of the staff, had been vaccinated, with the other 165 unvaccinated. While the August announcement had encouraged 30 employees to get vaccinated, the mandate caused another 30 to quit.

“Our hope is as we get closer (to the deadline), the numbers will increase of individuals who are vaccinated, fewer individuals will leave and maybe, with a little luck, some of those who have resigned will reconsider,” Cayer told NYTV7.

COVID-19 cases in New York are still a problem that the state is trying to fix. As of Sept. 11, the daily average over the last seven days in New York is at 1,144 confirmed cases. Vaccine data in New York shows that 67.4% of residents have received their first vaccine dose, while 60.7% have been fully vaccinated, NYC Health reported.

President Joe Biden announced on Sept. 9 that all companies with 100 or more employees would need to mandate the COVID-19 vaccine, leaving many companies to scramble on how to comply with the order.
