NY Sports Fans Unimpressed as Empire State Salutes Super Bowl Teams

New York’s iconic Empire State Building glowed in the respective colors of the teams who made it through to the Super Bowl on January 29, but plenty of local sports fans were unimpressed, judging by the response on Twitter.

Footage by Noah Coslov shows the building glowing green in the wake of the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the San Francisco 49ers. The skyscraper lit up red later on, after the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals.

In its tweet for the latter, the official Empire State Building account said, “That hurt us more than it hurt you,” possibly in response to the replies from unimpressed New Yorkers after the building went green after the earlier game.

The New York Giants, beaten in the previous round by the Eagles, tweeted, “Just here for the comments.”

Keith Powers, majority leader of the New York City Council, tweeted: “Let me be on the record saying that this is absolutely ridiculous.”

ESPN social media director Brett Edgerton joked, “Maybe they had that color ready for the Jets and were tired of waiting.”

“Fresh off the train from the Eagles game and greeted by this beautiful site of a green Empire State Building,” Coslov wrote alongside his video. Credit: Noah Coslov via Storyful
