NY state trooper shoots, kills suspect at Rochester Tech Park in Gates

One person was fatally shot by a New York State Police trooper Sunday evening at the Rochester Technology Park in Gates, according to State Police.

The involved trooper was not injured during the encounter near Elmgrove Road just before 9:30 p.m., said trooper Lynnea Crane.

Troopers said that the fatal encounter followed a pursuit started on Interstate 490, near Innovative Field, in Rochester when a trooper attempted to stop a westbound car regarding traffic violations. Crane said that the driver did not stop as directed and continued west on I-490 to Route 531 in Gates. The trooper followed.

The driver, a man whose name was not released, exited the highway at Rochester Tech Park on Elmgrove Road, struck a guard rail, jumped a curb and drove into a field, Crane said. Once in the field, the driver got out of the car and ignored verbal commands from the trooper. While the trooper was attempting to arrest the driver, the driver fired a round from his handgun "in close proximity to the trooper," Crane said.

The trooper returned fire, striking and killing the driver, Crane said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Monroe County sheriff's deputies and Rochester police assisted at the scene. The state Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation is investigating the fatal shooting. The office said that officials recovered a gun from the scene.

Troopers are expected to hold a press briefing at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
