NYC businesses would get extended protections under Council bill

The City Council is moving to extend a law barring landlords from going after commercial tenants' personal funds if they can’t make rent, through March 2021.

The measure passed in May with an original expiration date of Sept. 30, but the bill’s prime sponsor says small businesses, in particular, still need help.

“Should business owners be forced to walk away or temporarily close their stores through no fault of their own, they can do so without facing threats to their personal assets or life savings,” Councilwoman Carlina Rivera (D-Manhattan) said of the bill on Wednesday.

She also called for two accompanying bills aimed at preventing tenant harassment to be extended.
