First, today's weather:

Partial sunshine. High: 35 Low: 28.

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. New York City COVID cases and hospitalizations are 'stabilizing' but remain high, according to Mayor Eric Adams, who fell short of prematurely announcing they were in 'decline.' The city saw 13,811 news cases on Sunday, down from 47,591 last week. (New York City Patch)

  2. Hundreds attended a massive funeral for fifteen of the seventeen victims of last week's fire in The Bronx. Four of the victim's bodies will be buried in Gambia, where many from the close-knit community hail from, while the other eleven will be buried in New Jersey. Governor Kathy Hochul also announced a $2 million relief fund for the building's tenants. (New York City Patch)

  3. A 15-year-old girl was killed in an apparent hit-and-run in Midwood, Brooklyn, according to police. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated. (NBC New York)

  4. New York City schools suffered from a massive outage of the online grading platform Skedula, which it also uses for contact tracing and attendance. The platform also stores an unknown amount of student data, making its outage a potential security risk. The weeklong outage came on the first week back from the December holidays. (Chalkbeat New York)

  5. New York City residents who receive SNAP benefits will be receiving extra cash this month. Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an additional $230 million for the program, meaning that everyone enrolled will receive the maximum benefits. (CBS New York)

Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera’s drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.

Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
