New York City just made it easier for residents to step up and get their shot.
Starting Saturday, New Yorkers ages 50 and above will be able to get their COVID vaccine at a city-run site without making an appointment, Mayor de Blasio announced.
“Our priority for the next few months is clear: we need to vaccinate as many New Yorkers as possible,” Blasio said in a statement. “By making it easier for New Yorkers 50 and older to get vaccinated, we are on our way to fully vaccinating five million New Yorkers by June.”
Before the change, only New Yorkers 75 and older were allowed to do walk-in appointments at city-run sites, including YMCAs throughout the five boroughs, Lehman College in the Bronx, the Brooklyn Army Terminal, City College in Manhattan and CitiField. Some of the sites are run 24 hours a day.
More than 5 million doses of the COVID vaccine have been administered in the city, health officials said.
“We’re making incredible progress vaccinating New York City, but the job is not finished — we know we still have more New Yorkers to reach with this life-saving resource,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Melanie Hartzog.
Gov. Cuomo dropped the vaccination eligibility age from 60 to 50 late last month, although New Yorkers still needed to secure an appointment through the state online portal.
“We are now in a new season,” Cuomo said at the time. “We are in the season of the spring, and the spring says it’s a time for renewal, rebirth and you can feel it in the air.”
