🌱 NYC Street Vendors Enforcement + Blueprint To End Gun Violence

Hey, New York City! Let's get you started this Tuesday with everything you need to know going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Clouds giving way to some sun. High: 42 Low: 17.

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. Mayor Eric Adams called on teenagers to be given criminal charges for illegal gun possession, citing the lack of charges as a loophole allowing gang members to avoid weapons charges. In his "Blueprint to End Gun Violence" announced on Monday, Adams also stated his interest in bringing back a controversial plainclothes police unit disbanded last year. (New York City Patch)

  2. Manhattan politicians are calling on the MTA to begin a sliding doors pilot program on subway platforms as soon as possible, in the wake of the death of Michelle Go. The MTA has largely responded with pledges to increase police enforcement. (New York City Patch)

  3. Two weeks after mobile sport betting became legal in New York State, the numbers of New Yorkers taking part in the practice is set to outpace New Jersey, bringing in a total of over $16.9 million. (WPIX 11 New York)

  4. NYC street vendors are receiving more violations than ever before–even after a policy introduced by De Blasio to shift enforcement from the NYPD to a different city agency went into effect last year, according to a report from Gothamist. (Gothamist)

  5. Former Alaska Governor and one-time GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin was all set to appear in court in a case against the New York Times, alleging that an editorial they wrote in 2017 negatively affected her. However, after she tested positive for COVID the trial is on pause. (Associated Press)

Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They’re chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond “Dry January.” We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we’ve since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.

Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they’ve extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.
