NYPD top spokesman Julian Phillips leaving department, says police official

The NYPD’s top spokesman will leave the department after a spending about a year on the job, according to a police official.

Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Julian Phillips will depart the NYPD in early July, the official said. He took on the post in July 2022.

Phillips, who underwent double knee replacement surgery in March, informed Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell of his decision, leaving her with two high-level spots to fill in one of the city’s largest public information offices.

Deputy Chief Kevin Maloney, the commanding officer of the office, retired from the NYPD this week.

Phillips, who could not be reached for comment, is an Emmy-award-winning journalist who immediately prior to joining the NYPD worked in radio, providing news, weather and traffic updates on WBLS-FM’s “Steve Harvey Morning Show” and on WLIB-AM, a Christian station.

He also hosts “Eat & Argue,” a public television show in which elected officials talk politics and issues over dinner.
