NYSPHSAA Class C and D regional basketball: 3 teams from Section 4 advance to state semis

Three basketball teams from Section 4 will compete in New York State Public High School Athletic Association final fours in classes C and D following victories in regional finals Saturday at Visions Federal Credit Union Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.

Moravia's boys, a state champion in 2017, advanced to the Class C semifinals in Glens Falls with a 58-38 victory over Dolgeville.

Two girls teams from Section 4 will compete in semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. Oxford won its Class D regional final, 70-44, over Smithtown Christian. Union Springs rolled to a 60-47 victory over Cooperstown in the Class C regional final.

Union Springs and Oxford are both seeking their programs' first state title.

In Saturday's other game at the arena, the Chapel Field Christian boys topped Section 4 champion South Kortright/Andes, 68-58, in Class D. Jonah McDuffie and Noah Swart had 23 points each for Section 9's Chapel Field (19-5). Connor Quarino scored 22 for South Kortright/Andes (21-4) and Josh Anderson added 19.

Barrows sparked Oxford girls

Midstate Athletic Conference member Oxford (21-5) dominated Section 11 champion Smithtown Christian from the get-go.

Madalyn Barrows was high scorer for Oxford with 26 points. Abby Loiacono paced Smithtown with 28 points.

What's Next: Oxford will play Section 2 champion Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons in a semifinal at 10:45 a.m. March 18 at Hudson Valley CC. The title game against either Panama or Hammond is set for 10 a.m. March 19.

Union Springs led by IAC MVP

Kailey Kalet, the MVP of the Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Small School Division, scored 20 points to lift Union Springs past Section 3 champion Cooperstown, which made a fourth-quarter charge after trailing 49-29 through three quarters.

Danielle Waldron added 14 points for Union Springs (24-0).

Dani Seamon had 25 points for Cooperstown (19-6).

What's Next: The Wolves will play Section 6 champion Randolph in a state semifinal at 12:30 p.m. March 18 at Hudson Valley. The title game is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. March 19.

Moravia earned shot at second state title

Playing on the same court the 2016-17 team did in winning Moravia's state title with a 54-39 win over Lake George, the Blue Devils returned to the Class C final four behind 17 points from Aiden Kelly, 15 from Joe Baylor and 13 from Kyler Proper in the win over Section 3 champ Dolgeville (23-2).

A 7-0 Dolgeville surge to end the third quarter was answered by a 3-pointer from Proper early in the final quarter that gave the Blue Devils a 42-27 edge on the way to the 20-point win.

What's Next: Moravia (23-1) will face Section 5 champion Lyons in a state semifinal at 11:15 a.m. March 17 at Cool Insuring Arena. Winner takes on either Canton or Haldane in the title game at 5:15 p.m. March 18.
