NYSPHSAA golf championships: Big day for Ursuline; long Day for Section 1 boys

It was a memorable day for Ursuline, which is coming home from the NYSPHSAA Girls Golf Championship at McGregor Lakes Country Club with a team title. Nina Choe and Sofia Nogalo led the charge for the Koalas, finishing second and third overall.

Albany Academies sophomore Kennedy Swedick captured the championship with an even-par total of 144.

Choe, an eighth-grader, began the final round Monday one shot off the lead. She closed with a 75 and wound up four shots back. Nogalo, a junior, shot a final-round 76 to finish with a 6-over total of 150.

Ursuline finished eight shots better than second-place Albany Academies with a 56-over-par aggregate. Julia Kret made it three Koalas in the top 10, finishing at 16-over and Sarah Brannigan tied for 35th.

Section 1 repeated, as well, finishing 20 strokes better than runner-up Section 8.

All players who finished inside the top 20 were named all-state. Scarsdale's Emma Lee, Fox Lane/Byram Hills' Faith Petrino and  Rye's Hailey Ryan joined Choe, Nogalo and Kret on that list.

NYSPHSAA boys championship

Carmel's Luke O'Grady-Rodgers posted a 1-over-par round of 73 Monday on the final day of the NYSPHSAA boys golf championships to vault into the Top 10. The junior's two-day total of 148 was the best among the nine Section 1 golfers who competed in the event at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

Eastchester freshman Kevin Wang also carded a final-round 73 to move into a tie for 20th. He and O'Grady-Rodgers earned all-state honors by virtue of a top-20 finish. Arlington senior Shaun Flaherty, who won the Section 1 championship last month, carded a 77 and was one of seven local players who fared better in Monday's final round.

The contingent from Section 1 tied for seventh among the 11 sections participating.
