Oak Grove running back is named KC Star’s high school football Player of the Week

Oak Grove High School junior Noah Spencer plays a brand new position for the high school football team this year.

He started out as a defensive back. But Oak Grove head coach Pat Richard asked him if he could learn how to play running back for the team.

Spencer’s hard work paid off against Harrisonville High School during Oak Grove’s homecoming game on Oct. 13. Harrisonville is also a team Oak Grove hasn’t beat since 2013, Richard told The Star.

The junior’s performance also earned him the honor of being named The Star’s high school football Player of the Week.

“Noah has had an incredible impact this season as a first-year starting running back,” Richard said. “It is awesome to see the payoff for all of his hard work in the offseason. His toughness, burst and finishing speed were on full display Friday night.”

Every week, The Star reaches out to high school football coaches in the Kansas City area for their Player of the Week nominations. The nominations are collected for a weekly poll, which is open from Wednesday to midnight Thursday. The poll recorded 405 votes for the week of Oct. 13.

Spencer ran the ball 20 times for 287 yards and three touchdowns in Oak Grove’s 45-20 win over Harrisonville. He added two catches for 26 receiving yards. On defense, he broke up three pass attempts and secured three tackles.

“Our offensive line has been incredible all year,” Spencer said. “They were clearing the path all night and giving me a clean road to the endzone.”

Oak Grove followed up the Oct. 13 win with an 87-56 victory over Warrensburg on Oct. 20, pushing their regular season record to 7-2.

Spencer and the rest of the Oak Grove football team now have their sights set on the Missouri district playoffs. Oak Grove is the No. 2 seed in Class 3, District 7 tournament, and they host Summit Christian Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
