Oak Ridge Community Band winter concert is Feb. 18 at Grove Theater

After missing rehearsals and postponing a band event due to the snow and ice storm in January, the Oak Ridge Community Band is presenting its Winter Concert for Oak Ridgers and area residents at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the historic Grove Theater, 123 Randolph Road.

Admission is free.

The concert will feature a variety of entertaining numbers including Pierre La Plante’s folksong “American Riversongs,” Robert Thurston’s arrangement of “Amazing Grace,” Robert W. Smith’s exciting “Into the Storm,” and Kenneth Alford’s “Colonel Bogey” march, which some audience members may recognize as the theme song of the 1957 classic movie “Bridge Over the River Kwai.”

Other songs on the program will be Richard Saucedo’s “Groovee!” directed by band member Patrick Thomas; Brian Balmages’ “3,2,1…”; Bert Appermont’s arrangement of “Coldplay in Symphony”; and community band director Shaun Salem’s own composition titled, “Overture for the Great Hall.”

The audience will also hear the band perform Saucedo’s “Nightsong” and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Encanto,” featuring “The Family Madrigal,” “We Don’t Talk about Bruno,” “Two Oruguitas,” “Surface Pressure,” and “Waiting on a Miracle.”

The Oak Ridge Community Band rehearses every Thursday evening at the First Baptist Church. Approximately 75 members volunteer their time each week to rehearse and to give concerts throughout the year.

New members are always welcome, and there are no auditions. For more information on how to join, call 865-202-2773. Visit the band’s website at www.orcb.org or its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/OakRidgeCommunityBand.
