Oak Ridge Free Medical Clinic's nursing director to speak to AAUW Feb. 27

Kate Hull, director of nursing for the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge will be the speaker at the Monday general meeting of the Oak Ridge Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at 12:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Room 104. Her topic is “ What happens in Tennessee when you get sick?”

After a brief business meeting of AAUW, she will talk about disparities in health care in Tennessee in view of the state’s rejection of Medicaid expansion, according to an AAUW news release. The church is located at 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Beverages will be provided for guests, but contrary to its practice before the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no luncheon provided.

The Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge was established by the late John Auxier with the help of members of the medical profession and the public who were concerned that health care be available to all Tennesseans. Its location is 116 E. Division Road in Oak Ridge.  It has branches also in Briceville and Harriman (temporarily in Rockwood).  There is a Mobile Unit available also. the clinic's website is https://www.fmcor.org/.

AAUW  was established in 1881 in the interest of furthering equity and education for women and girls.  The Oak Ridge branch was established in 1951 and numbers among its speakers over the years: Eleanor Roosevelt and Nancy Grace Roman, who gave a lecture for in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Hubble Telescope.” Both speakers were active members of AAUW. The first chief aAstronomer for NASA, Roman had the Nancy Grace Space Telescope named for her and was known as “the Mother of the Hubble Telescope.”

The public is invited to attend the monthly general meetings of the Oak Ridge Branch of AAUW on the fourth Mondays of the month from September through May except for November and December.
