Oak Ridge school superintendent's contract extended to 2028

Oak Ridge School Superintendent Bruce Borchers' contract has been extended another year.

The Oak Ridge Board of Education approved the one-year contract extension at the board's Jan. 22 meeting. All four members present voted in favor of the extension, with member Heather Hartmann absent from the meeting at the School Administration Building.

As part of the annual contract extension vote, the board members evaluate Borchers and have the opportunity to meet with him one-on-one to discuss matters and the evaluation.

"His evaluation was an outstanding evaluation," Board Chairman Keys Fillauer said. He added that Borchers tends to give credit for accomplishments to others on his staff and in the individual schools, but that credit ultimately must be given to him as leader of the school system.

Borchers is currently serving his 11th year as superintendent. His new four-year contract will go into effect on June 18. With the one-year extension his contract would expire on June 17, 2028. A four-year contract is the longest one the board can offer the superintendent under state law.

The contract extension carries no increase in pay or benefits. That's done - as it is with other Oak Ridge educators - through the approval of a new school system budget each year. Borchers currently makes an annual salary of $235,455.
