Oakland basketball advances to Horizon League final with 69-58 win over Northern Kentucky

Daniel Oladapo scored 19 points and had nine rebounds as Oakland basketball defeated Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League tournament semifinal Monday in Indianapolis.

Rashad Williams scored 17 and Jalen Moore added 14 points as the Golden Grizzlies, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, held No. 4 seed Norse to 33% shooting.

Oakland will take on Cleveland State, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the championship game. The winner will get an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament.

Oakland (12-17) won despite shooting 7-for-19 (36.8%) from the free-throw line and getting outrebounded, 44-39. The Golden Grizzlies had only four turnovers and had 16 assists on 26 baskets while shooting 44.8%. The Norse shot just 33%.

The Golden Grizzlies opened the season 0-9 with losses to Michigan (in overtime), Purdue, Oklahoma State and Michigan State. But Oakland went 10-10 in the Horizon League.

Greg Kampe's team has not been in the NCAA tournament since 2011, as a member of the Summit League.

Trevon Faulkner scored 26 points to lead all scorers for Northern Kentucky (14-11).
