Obama's former economic guru on the midterms

What can we expect following the big Republican victory in yesterday’s midterm elections?

More gridlock.

That’s the prediction by President Obama’s former top economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee, who tells Yahoo Finance that Republicans already have their sights on the next Presidential race.

“I don’t think they necessarily want to get something done,” he says. “I think they’re going to want to show major policy differences and dare the President to veto them and set up the battle in 2016.”

Still, Goolsbee sees a chance for some bipartisanship over the next two years.

“Are they just going to bring up the bills that have passed the House but not the Senate, or are overtures by (GOP Senate leader) Mitch McConnell where he kind of said 'we’re going to be the grown up and find things we can agree on' be the order of the day,” he asks. "I think that’s the big question.”

One thing Goolsbee does anticipate is a rush by the lame duck Democratic Senate to act fast before the new year, especially on such things as confirming a new Attorney General.

“They’re going to try to get everything they can get through before they lose control,” he suggests. “And because the House controls most legislation, that’s going to take the form of appointments."

Goolsbee, now a professor at the University of Chicago business school, says we really shouldn’t read too much in the GOP’s performance yesterday.

“This is basically what always happens when you are six years into an administration,” he notes. “You get ‘We’re weary of the President, we’re weary of the party that’s been in power a long time, we want to try something new.'”
