Obama says open borders are 'unsustainable' and calls for immigration reform

Former President Barack Obama described the idea of having open borders as "unsustainable" and called for a reform of the immigration system in the United States.

In an interview with ABC's Good Morning America, Obama explained that while immigration reform is a "tough issue" to deal with because Americans tend to want to "help others," fixing the system is something that is "long overdue."

Obama's comments come after more than 15,000 Haitian migrants camped underneath an international bridge in Del Rio, Texas, after crossing the Rio Grande to seek asylum in the U.S.

"As big-hearted as he is, nobody understands that better than Joe Biden," Obama added.

"The question is now: Are we gonna get serious about dealing with this problem in a systemic way, as opposed to these one-offs where we're constantly reacting to emergencies? And I think that that's something that every American should wanna put an end to," Obama continued, referencing the release of images and videos which depicted mounted Border Patrol agents allegedly whipping Haitian migrants attempting to cross the border.

"It is heartbreaking, and it is, I think, one of those situations in which if you have a system that overall is dysfunctional, you are going to get episodes in which what's happening right in front of you is something that nobody wants."

Obama explained that while immigration may be a difficult issue because Americans want to help others in need, specifically when they see "families that are desperately trying to get" to the U.S. in order to escape from "violence or catastrophe," that there are also rules and laws.

"We're a nation-state. We have borders. The idea that we can just have open borders is something that ... as a practical matter, is unsustainable," Obama said.

Following the situation in Del Rio, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has admitted that more than 12,000 Haitian migrants that had been living in the camp had been released into the U.S. after previously stating that the camp under the bridge had been cleared out.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection experienced almost 209,000 enforcement encounters in August, marking the second consecutive month of enforcement encounters with migrants above 200,000, Fox News reported.
