'Obey the rules': Indonesia's doctor shouts from tricycle

Doctors are already being worked around the clock as cases of the coronavirus soar, but on the outskirts of Jakarta's suburbs, Doctor Fakhrurrozi doesn't just hang up his stethoscope after a day's work.

Instead he jumps on the back of a tricycle armed with a loudspeaker and shouts at people to stay indoors.

"Honestly, if we see people who do not comply with the government's appeal in the neighbourhood, or people who have low levels of awareness, it is everyone's responsibility, including me as a doctor, especially in my own neighbourhood."

He started the initiative alongside three other volunteers last month after the country's first two COVID-19 cases.

Together as volunteers, they patrol the neighbourhood three times a week, for nearly three hours.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has so far refrained from ordering a complete lockdown in the country of 270 million people.

( SOUNDBITE) (Bahasa Indonesia) GENERAL PRACTITIONER DR. FAKHRURROZI SAYING:

"From the existing data and numbers, the trend is similar all over Indonesia - (number of cases) increasing everyday and continue to increase. "Therefore, it is important that the people are aware and obey the rules of not leaving their houses."

The country has recorded the highest deaths in Southeast Asia at nearly 80, yet only around 900 confirmed cases of infection, the data is seen as understating the scale of infections because of a low rate of testing.
