The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ Series Is Now ‘On Hold’

From Men's Health

  • Last year, Ewan McGregor was confirmed to return to Star Wars for a limited series centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

  • Collider reported that the series has been put 'on hold' for now, and the crew was sent home.

  • McGregor assured fans that everything still will be good to go—the wait will just be a bit longer.

Star Wars fans excited to see Ewan McGregor return to play Obi-Wan Kenobi for the first time since 2005's Revenge of the Sith are going to have their patience tested, as reports have emerged saying that the Obi-Wan Disney+ series has been put "on hold" and that the crew has been sent home "indefinitely".

The report, which comes from Collider, says that the delay is due to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy being unhappy with the way the scripts had come together. The star of the series, Obi-Wan himself, doesn't sound too worried, though.

"The scripts are really, really good. They want to make them better," McGregor told ET at a Bird of Prey event. "And they just slid the production to shooting next year."

Star Wars fans should probably look at this as a positive thing. Yes, it will be longer until the series hits Disney+, but it seems like Kennedy and company are making sure that the series is as good as it can be in the writing process as possible. While The Rise of Skywalker has been a box office smash, the reviews have been mixed and Lucasfilm probably wants to do whatever it can to avoid a repeat of that.

In addition to the shift in shooting dates, The Hollywood Reporter also reported that the series would be changed from a planned six-part series to a four-parter. The series will still be entirely directed by Deborah Chow, who earlier this year became the first ever female Star Wars director when she helmed an episode of The Mandalorian, and the scripts are still expected to be written by Hossein Amini (who wrote Drive with Ryan Gosling).

Despite the perceived drama, McGregor maintained his even head. In fact, he said that the show's airdate—which had not yet been revealed—hasn't even changed. "It's not as dramatic as it sounds," he added to ET. "I just got here tonight, and it's like, oh my god look at all this stuff! It's not that dramatic. I think we have the same—We're airing on the same day and all that stuff."

So while the Obi-Wan series still sounds like it's a good bit away, fans can be assured: it's coming. In the meantime, if you're hankering for some Ewan McGregor, you can get ready for his turn as villain Black Mask in Birds of Prey, out February 7th. Or, if you're really hankering, you can watch McGregor as twins in the third season of FX's Fargo on Hulu, or watch him in Doctor Sleep, now available digitally.
