Obituary: ​Austin Louis Joyner, 80, of Madison

He enjoyed oil painting and monthly meetings with his book club where he was an avid reader of historical and non-fiction books.

Austin Louis Joyner, age 80, husband of Marika Bollen Joyner, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 with his family by his side. Al was born on November 14, 1938 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to the late Austin and Leila Carre` Joyner. He attended Steven's Tech in Hoboken, NJ and spent the last 45 years residing in Madison, CT.

Al was a helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam during the beginning of the conflict in 1963. After 9 years in the Marine Corps he honorably discharged and became a pilot for Pan-Am World Airways. After Pan-Am went out of business he went back to school and became a financial advisor until his retirement.

Al had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed oil painting and monthly meetings with his book club where he was an avid reader of historical and non-fiction books. Al was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife Marika, Al is survived by a son, Paul Nicolas Joyner; a daughter, Claire Joyner Christina; Granddaughters, Tatum Marie Christina and Piper Ellen Christina; a sister, Leila Joyner-Smith of Washington, D.C.; a niece, Holly Lynde of Atlanta, GA and several cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. in the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Rd., Madison, CT 06443.
