Observations from Charles Bassey, Sixers in SLC summer win over Jazz

The Philadelphia 76ers continued their Salt Lake City summer league tour on Wednesday when they took on the Utah Jazz looking to bounce back from a loss on Tuesday. They would have to do so without the services of Paul Reed, Isaiah Joe, and Jaden Springer who all sat out in this one due to reconditioning.

With those players being out, it allowed others to chine and show off some of their game. It also allowed Trevelin Queen to make his summer debut with the Sixers and it allowed Charles Bassey to do more with Reed sitting out. The result was an 86-82 win over the Jazz with Bassey scoring 17 points and nine rebounds.

Charlie Brown Jr. had 12 points and two steals, Queen had 15 and four rebounds, and Cassius Winston added 11 and six assists. Myles Powell had 13 and four steals off the bench while Julian Champagnie pulled down 10 rebounds for Philadelphia in this one.

Here are some observations from the summer league win:

Charles Bassey

A lot of what Bassey does on offense is predicated on running pick-and-roll and being able to throw down lobs at the rim which he was able to do early. He caught a nice pass from Queen and was able to throw down a slam off a roll, but his game is not great in the summer league setting because he is more structure-dependent on the offensive end. That doesn’t necessarily happen often in the summer league. Nonetheless, it was good to see him have a better night than he did on Tuesday and he was helpful on defense.

Trevelin Queen

It’s very easy to see why the Sixers like this kid. He’s athletic, he has a scorer’s mentality, and he has a lot of audacity when it comes to the 3-point shot. He wasn’t efficient in this one, but one can tell that he isn’t afraid to take any shots. He isn’t going to be bothered by a miss and that is a huge asset to have in this league. He had an excellent finish to put the game away late and he was a pest on the defensive end as well.

Charlie Brown Jr.

This guy is a legitimate NBA defender. He already showed that with the Sixers in the 2021-22 season, but he was absolutely terrific on the defensive end of the floor in this one. He got into the passing lanes, he bothered the hell out of the Jazz on the perimeter, and he was able to get out in transition. If he can develop a 3-ball, then he is going to have a very long NBA career.

Myles Powell

Powell had some experience with the Sixers at the NBA level in the 2021-22 season and he had some good moments. However, he is still in need of some development and he showed off some of his scoring chops on Thursday. He knocked down a couple of triples in the 4th quarter as he helped hold off the Jazz a bit. He also was an essential part of the Sixers being able to get out in transition.

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie was an undrafted signee and he stood out a bit on the defensive end and on the glass. He had some really good moments as a starter in this one and this is a game where he can build off his efforts and continue to grow as a player. It will be interesting to see how he continues to progress.

Cassius Winston

Winston has some really good instincts. He has some NBA experience with the Washington Wizards under his belt and it shows. He is patient, he doesn’t rush things, and that leads to some easy and smooth offense out on the floor. The Sixers were able to run things well with him manning the point and he only had one turnover with his six assists.
