Observations from the Library

For some reason…. maybe because it’s a round number…I have hope that 2022 will be a better year. But I’m glad to see the back of 2021!

One of the bright spots at the library this year is the arrival of SueChefs. We finally upgraded the second floor catering kitchen to include a full stove which means that all of our cooking programs can take off. But the one we are most excited about right now is SueChefs. Sue James will be teaching cooking to elementary age kids live beginning on 1/20 at 4:40 PM. This group will meet at the same time on the third Thursday of every month. Each month has a theme. January’s theme was “Say Cheese!” and an easy mac and cheese recipe will kick us off.

Sue is also working with Gina Vitale to bring a teen version of SueChefs to the library. The first live program will be March 9th at 4:00PM. After that they will meet every second Wednesday at 4:00PM. Again, there will be themes and in March the theme will be African American food. I believe the plan will be to cook gumbo and yams that day.

Cooking programs already in place here include Cooking with Miss Gina which is virtual and several adult programs including cooking with hot pots, baking and cooking with air fryers.

Cooking programs are popular in Waynesboro and we are delighted to be able to support them with our new, improved kitchen. Any new ideas are welcome, of course. Just let us know what you would like or better yet, what you might like to teach!

The next project we have coming up is the renovation of the Teen Room. We plan to add better lighting and to give it a fresh coat of paint. Once we finish the latter, we are delighted to say that a beautiful mural will be installed thanks to the efforts of Melanie Erb, art teacher at the high school and her talented students in the Art Club. They decided on a nature theme which will communicate the positive and creative energy we hope to always see in that room.

Above and beyond the cooking programs and the Teen Room renovation, the programs coming up soon singled out by the programming staff for special mention are:

For our youngest patrons, the Lego Club meeting is every 1st Thursday of the month at 4:00PM and “Children’s’ Paint and Slurp” (obviously a version of our very popular new program for adults called” Paint and Sip”) is scheduled for March 8th and the 11th

For Teens, Gina is making Squishy Circuits during Teen Makerspace day on 1/27 at 4:00PM.

Please note that we are now in the middle of our Winter Reading Program which lasts until the end of February. If we can read 20,000 minutes in that time, the Friends of the Library will donate launchpads, a mixer, blender and bowl set for the kitchen as well as an Instant Pot duo pressure and instant pot blender. We also have a gift basket for the winner of Reading Challenge Bingo.
