The first trailer for City on Fire, the new show from The OC creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, has been released.

The Apple TV+ series is set in 2003 and based on Garth Risk Hallberg's 2015 novel, which depicts the aftermath of a murder in Central Park, New York City on Independence Day.

The mystery-thriller follows Charlie (Wyatt Oleff), who's grieving the death of his father during 9/11 when his best friend Samantha (Chase Sui Wonders) is murdered.

After hearing about what happened, Charlie endeavours to uncover the reasons why Samantha was killed.

According to Apple's official synopsis for the show, it becomes apparent during the investigation that Samantha connects "mysterious citywide fires, the downtown music scene, and a wealthy uptown real estate family fraying under the strain of the many secrets they keep".

City on Fire also stars Jemima Kirke, Nico Tortorella, Ashley Zukerman and Max Milner. Jesse Peretz, best known for his work on Girls and GLOW, will direct the first four episodes of the eight-part series.

The first three episodes will premiere on May 12, with the remaining five parts airing weekly until June 16.

Schwartz and Savage worked on The OC throughout its four-year run, with the series starring Peter Gallagher, Rachel Bilson, Adam Brody, Ben McKenzie and Mischa Barton.

Bilson, who played Summer Roberts on the show, has previously spoken about the possibility of the series being rebooted, saying: "I think there's always those discussions and people saying if they want it and whatnot.

"It's kind of hard to figure out where everyone would go. I'm sure there's places to go. There's like a whole new class I'm sure they could come up with," she continued.

"It's one of those things where it's hard to be, like, do you want to touch this, or do you want to leave it as is?"

City on Fire will premiere on Apple TV+ on May 12, with new episodes debuting weekly.
