New chief medical officer for SMA Healthcare

SMA Healthcare, whose holdings include The Centers in Ocala, has hired Dr. Yusef A. Canaan as the new chief medical officer.

"Dr. Canaan brings nearly 20 years of medical experience to SMA Healthcare, where he will provide medical leadership and oversight to all SMA Healthcare programs, establish strategic goals for medical programming and services, and ensure all medical services adhere to and exceed standards," the company said in a news release.

Canaan, a board-certified psychiatrist, earned his medical degree from Instituto Technologico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) in 2002 and previously served as chief resident at Larkin Community Hospital in South Miami and as a staff psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

"Most recently, he spent the last four years as a Telemedicine Physician for the Indiana State Department of Corrections," the release said.

Canopy 360 tax and accounting partners and employees join James Moore & Co.

The tax and accounting partners and employees of Ocala-based Canopy 360 are joining James Moore & Co., P.L. effective Nov. 1.

"Canopy 360 was established in Ocala in 2005," Canopy said in a news release announcing the move. "The move to James Moore fits into the strategic growth plans for both firms. Canopy 360 was seeking a firm that closely matched their client demographics, culture and core values. James Moore sought to make headway in the Ocala market— a natural fit as the center of the firm’s geographic footprint."

James Moore, founded in 1964, already has offices in Daytona Beach, DeLand, Gainesville and Tallahassee.

Symmetry Coffee opens cafe inside ORMC

Symmetry Coffee Co. has opened a location inside Ocala Regional Medical Center, 1431 SW First Ave., Ocala. The hospital is part of Ocala Health.

"In a continued effort to collaborate with the local community, Vice President of Operations Joel Leone was intentional in seeking out a local business to support Ocala Health," the company said in a news release.

This is the second location for Symmetry. It plans to open another location at Ocala Health's West Marion Community Hospital.

Better Life Home Health has announced that Edythe Beckles-Magee is the new home health administrator and Anthony Alonzo is the healthcare relations representative.

Better Life is a Community Health Accreditation Partner (CHAP) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Five-Star rated agency that serves 16 counties, including Marion, according to a company news release.

Waste Pro buys Ocala-based company

Longwood-based Waste Pro USA Inc. has bought Ocala-based Coastal Disposal.

"As part of the arrangement, Waste Pro has obtained two roll-off trucks and 50 roll-off containers which customers can rent for the removal of items such as construction debris, landscape/yard waste, garage cleanouts, and bulk items. Container sizes range from 10 to 40 yards in size," Waste Pro said in a news release.

Waste Pro operates in 10 southeastern states and serves more than 2 million residential customers and 100,000 commercial customers, according to the release.

2 new team members for The Villages Insurance Partners

Madison Hilt and Mary Ann Schabowski have joined The Villages Insurance Partners, according to agency news releases.

Hilt will be based in the Lake Sumter Landing office and specialize in auto, home, umbrella and flood coverage. Schambowski will be based at Spanish Springs and specialize in home, auto, golf car, motorcycle and umbrella coverage.

Paychecks for Patriots virtual job fair set for Nov. 10

The "Paychecks for Patriots" virtual job fair, organized by CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion, will be held 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 10.

"During Paychecks for Patriots, now in its ninth year, CareerSource CLM will help match veterans, service members, and military families with employers who value the knowledge, skills, and attributes attained during military service," CareerSource CLM said in a news release.

"Veterans, service members, and military families get early access to the hiring event starting at 10 a.m. with open access to all job seekers beginning at 11 a.m.," the release says. "To register, go to bit.ly/paychecks4patriots2021."
