Ocala prosecutors narrow range of charges against accused burglar

The State Attorney's Office has decided which criminal charges to file against Keyon Quintell Jones, 19, who was taken into custody in May and accused of a number of burglaries.

Here's what we know:

Charges that have been filed

Court records show the state has charged Jones with burglary of a dwelling while armed; attempted burglary of a dwelling while wearing a mask; attempted burglary of a dwelling while armed; grand theft more than $20,000; two counts of possession of a firearm by a delinquent; and resisting an officer without violence.

Charges that are not being pursued

When arrested, Jones had been held on eight counts of burglary of a conveyance while armed; two counts of burglary of a conveyance while armed wearing a mask; four counts of grand theft of a firearm; three counts of petit theft $100 or more but less than $750; two counts of petit theft; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; possession of a firearm/ammunition by a delinquent; and use of a weapon during the commission of a felony.

Why weren't the other charges pursued?

In a court filing, Assistant State Attorney Adam Smith said the evidence was insufficient to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

Who is representing Jones?

What's next?

Jones has a September court date. It will be a pre-trial conference where the judge and lawyers from the prosecution and the defense will discuss the status of the case. Jones, from Weirsdale, has been in custody since his May 4 arrest. Bail is set at $152,000.

About the case

Jones is accused of burglarizing vehicles and homes between late 2022 and 2023. Money and other items were stolen. Authorities believe a second person maybe connected to the break-ins.
