OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush added to Wikipedia list of inventors killed by their own inventions

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, whose doomed Titan submersible is believed to have fatally imploded this week, has been added to Wikipedia’s list of inventors who were killed by their own inventions.

The 61-year-old is one of the entries under direct casualties, though the list has a category for popular legends and related stories.

The online encyclopedia remembers Rush as a “pilot, engineer, and businessman who oversaw the design and construction of the OceanGate submersible Titan, intended to take tourists to view the wreck of the Titanic.”

“On 18 June 2023, the craft imploded during a dive to the Titanic, killing Rush and four other passengers,” the entry concludes.

The sub made headlines all week after losing contact with the surface about one hour and 45 minutes into last Sunday’s expedition to see the similarly doomed 1912 ship.

Though international rescue efforts quickly convened, the vessel is believed to have suffered what the Coast Guard described as a “catastrophic implosion,” near-instantly killing all five men aboard.

Along with Rush, those who died include British billionaire Hamish Harding, French Titanic explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and 19-year-old Suleman Dawood, who was “terrified” to go but did so for his father and fellow passenger, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood.

The waiver required to ride in the self-described “experimental“ sub shields OceanGate from legal recourse, even in the case of negligence, and repeatedly warns passengers of the risk of death, disability or bodily injury.
