One bad inning Tuesday is all that prevented the Bartlesville Doenges Ford Indians to claim their first sweep in Oklahoma College League action.

The Indians (15-7-1) opened the OCL twinbill — held at Rogers State — by taking a big bite out of the Diamond Dogs, 5-1.

But, in the nightcap, SWAT Academy erupted for four runs in the final inning to pull past the Indians, 8-5.

The Indians are now 3-2-1 in the OCL.

During the first week (June 8), they tied with Marucci Midwest, 2-2, and spanked the Diamond Dogs, 11-1.

On June 14, the Generals down the Indians, 7-4, but Bartlesville bounced back in game two to drop SWAT Academy, 10-4.

SWAT gained a bit of revenge on Tuesday, but the Indians stayed unbeaten against the Dogs.

John Pannell is in his 10th season as the Indians manager/head coach.

Next up, the Indians play host this weekend to a college showcase event in which players from throughout Oklahoma, including local high schools, will display their skills in front of several college scouts.

The showcase is set to begin Thursday morning and run through Sunday. The workout/drills sessions are planned in the morning, with afternoon games — albeit they won’t count toward teams’ records — to follow.

A Boston Red Sox scout is slated to be in town all four days, Pannell said.

WINGET TOURNEY

The Indians next primary event will be the 63rd Annual Glen Winget Memorial July Fourth Tournament, playing on Rigdon Field at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium.

The tourney opened in 1959 and has taken place, every year since except for 1963.

The 2007 Winget tourney lasted a couple of days before it was flooded out before there was enough criteria to decide on a champion.

This year’s field includes nine teams — Bartlesville Indians, Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest, Springfield (Mo.) Kickapoo, Oklahoma Mud Cats, Three Rivers Bandits, Southern Elevation (Davis), Mountain Home (Ark.) Lockeroom, Fort Smith (Ark.) Sportsman and Bryan (Ark.).

Bartlesville and Springfield Hillcrest are the only teams to have participated in all previous 62 Winget tourneys.

Long-time participants throughout the past several years include Ft. Smith Sportsman, Springfield Kickapoo and Mountain Home (Ark.).

The Indians last won the Winget crown in the latter 2010s, but have claimed it only four times the past 23 years.

This year’s Winget also will be a qualifier for the Stan Musial World Series.

Following are summaries of Tuesday’s games.

In related information, the Indians have put out a call to ask for donations — due to unexpected rising costs — to help fund the program for the remainder of the season.

“Even $20 will go a long ways, the more we have the more we will succeed,” Pannell said.

TUESDAY GAME SUMMARIES

Indians 5, Diamond Dogs 1

Bradee Rigdon snapped off four brilliant innings of mound relief to keep the Dogs’ offense fenced up.

He kept their eyes spinning with eight strikeouts — and no walks issued. The Dogs managed just three hits off him.

Kyler Hancock had pitched a hitless first inning — just to get in a little game work — and struck out the side.

Josh Weber finished up on the bump by allowed just three hits and one run in the final 2.0 innings. None of the Indian pitchers allowed a walk.

On the offensive end, the Indians made the most of two hits, including a RBI double by Keegan Woods.

Evan McClenden singled home another run. Karson Lee lashed a sacrifice fly.

Kaeden Young earned two of the six walks garnered by the Indians.

The Indians stole four bases — one each by Daniel Barham, Harrison Clark, Kael Siemers and Young — to keep the Dogs defense at maximum discomfort.

In the top of the third, Lee plated Young on a sacrifice fly to lift the Indians to a 2-0 lead. Indian pitchers and fielders did the rest.

SWAT Academy 8, Indians 5

When the Indians scored four times in the bottom of the fourth, their road to victory seemed to have a green light.

But, SWAT fought back with four runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 8-5.

The Indians put up a goose-egg in the bottom of the fifth and then got bitten by the time limit.

As has been the case in recent action, the Indians struggled to generate an offensive boost in power part of the order.

Indian one and two-hole hitters Young and McClendon combined to hit 3-for-7 at the plate, with two runs scored and two RBIs.

But, the three-through-six hole batters combined to finish 0-for-8 at the plate, with one run scored, one RBI and three walks.

In fact, the only Indian besides Young and McClendon to deliver a hit was pinch-hitter Luke Fox.

Barham drove in his run with a sacrifice fly.

Despite the Indians’ offensive woes, they still scored five runs and led going into the last frame, 5-4.

Alan Covarrubias started on the bump for Bartlesville and worked three innings of five-hit ball. He allowed three runs (another one unearned), walked four and whiffed four.

Middle reliever Cole Hancock turned in 1.1 inning of one-hit ball while giving up three runs (another one unearned), walking four a striking out one.

Myson VanWinkle finished up the last 0.2 innings. He didn’t allow a hit or a run while fanning one batter and walking another.
