Oconee River south of Athens to reach flood stage Tuesday night

The Oconee River might reach a minor flood stage Tuesday night and Wednesday morning along an area south of Athens through Oconee and into Greene counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The river will reach flood stage shortly after midnight along the river and flow over into agriculture land and pastures with a up to 2 feet of water, a weather spokesman said Tuesday.

The river reached 12.3 feet and was still rising at 3 p.m. Tuesday. It is expected to reach a crest of 13 feet just after midnight, the weather service reported.

The flooding is in response to rain earlier this week in the Athens area. Athens has gotten 5 inches of rain in recent days, a spokesman said.

The flood warning was issued Tuesday afternoon.
