S-OCS Board moves forward with proposed greenhouse

The Spencer-Owen Community Schools Board of School Trustees recently met and approved a request to move forward with a proposed greenhouse for the Owen Valley High School and Middle School campus.

Board president Chad Cooper and board members Jack White, Amber Willen, Rick Smeltzer, Sonia Brinson, Derek Morgan and Mark Rogers were all present at the meeting.

The board began by considering approval of the minutes from its July 14 meeting. Brinson moved to approve the request, and Morgan seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously, 7-0.

Next, the board considered a request to declare a list of items from OVMS as surplus. These items include outdated books of the Indiana Education Code, an electric typewriter, a scantron machine and approximately 90 pairs of roller skates. Willen moved to declare the items surplus, and Rogers seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

The board then heard a request to approve an overnight fieldtrip for Mr. Walden & Mr. Soliday’s class at McCormick’s Creek Elementary School. Willen moved to approve the request. Smeltzer seconded the motion, and the motion passed 7-0.

Then, the board considered updates to the 2022-2023 re-entry in-person instruction plan. Superintendent Andy Cline provided an overview. The plan features optional mask wearing. Brinson moved to approve the request, and Morgan seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously,

Next, the board considered the request to advertise for bids for the greenhouse. Willen moved to approve the request. Rogers seconded the motion, and the motion passed 7-0.

The board then heard a request to authorize a pay scale to be used on a case-by-case basis for classified staff in key positions. The board inquired about a comprehensive, overall increase in salaries for classified staff. Brinson moved to approve the request. Morgan seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Then, the board heard a request to approve a MTSS classified position. This individual will help students that are struggling before the alternative school is their only option. Morgan moved to approve the request. White seconded the motion, and the motion passed 7-0.

The board was also informed of the following resignations: Angel Musselman, second-grade teacher for Spencer Elementary School; Lesley Spatta, secondary substitute teacher for S-COS; Kelly Raaf, Spanish teacher for OVHS; Erica Lee, Kindergarten Teacher for SES; Casey Smith, nurse assistant for MCES; Adriana Dow-Vaughn, instructional assistant for Gosport Elementary School; Dannellea Mobley, instructional assistant for MCES; and Salina Mertz, bus driver for S-OCS.

The board considered the employment items together as one motion and vote. Willen moved to approve the leaves, employment and coaches. Morgan seconded the motion, which passed 7-0.

An eight-week Family Medical Leave was approved for Mary Beckwith, inclusion teacher for MCES.

The new hires included: Payton (Judd) Froderman, OVMS music teacher; Rebecca Truax GES and Patricksburg Elementary School temporary music/art/PE teacher; Emily Reuter, GES & PES home/school advisor; Brittany Duncan, SES pre-K instructor; Brittney Hogan, MCES instructional assistant; Sarah Manuel, OVMS 29-hour custodian; Joshua Burton, S-OCS technician II; Brianna Freeman, pre-K instructional assistant for SES; Jenny McQuire, pre-K instructional assistant for GES; Mary Shelly, nurse assistant for MCES; Stacey Wheeler, OVMS math teacher; Julianna Burrell, OVMS/OVHS art teacher; Tamra Grandi, SES kindergarten teacher; and Jordan Froderman, secondary substitute teacher.

The new coaches included Tom Mangia, as OVMS head cross country coach and Jordan Froderman, as OVMS seventh-grade head football coach.

The school board will meet again at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, in the Mike Wells Memorial Board Room of Central Office, 205 E. Hillside Ave., Spencer.
