October events highlight domestic violence awareness in Superior
Sep. 22—SUPERIOR — To recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse, Inc. (CASDA) will be collaborating with community partners throughout October to highlight a message of nonviolence, raise funds and share information about local services for victims and survivors of abuse.
In 2021, the Superior Police Department responded to 208 domestic violence calls, and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to 128, for a total of 336 calls. Also in 2021, 403 children and adults received in-person services from CASDA, and the agency responded to 1,770 requests for help.
The month kicks off with a free Art in the Park event from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Barker's Island Festival Park Pavilion. It will feature local artists displaying and selling their work, as well as live music from local musicians Aaron Tank, Emily Hysjulien and James Wiita. Troy Howes, a descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, will be drumming and singing. The Oct. 1 event will include a dual proclamation from Jenny Van Sickle of Superior and Alicia Kozlowski of Duluth alerting the community to the issue of domestic violence. There will also be a number of guest speakers, including a survivor and advocates from local nonprofits that serve victims of domestic violence.
A follow-up educational activity, "Why Does She Stay?" will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at Vintage Italian Pizza, 1201 Tower Ave. The free interactive training offers participants a chance to experience the barriers that a victim of domestic violence might face when trying to flee. The event includes a complimentary free pizza meal served at 4:30 p.m., opening remarks at 5 p.m., the training activity at 5:15 p.m. and debriefing and discussion from 6-6:30 p.m.
Community members can support CASDA's services to victims and survivors during the nonprofit's annual Bowl-A-Thon to "strike out" domestic violence. The family-friendly fundraiser takes place Oct. 23 with tournament times at noon and 2:30 p.m. The cost is $100 for a team of five, with shoe rental, pizza and pop included.

Since 1988, CASDA has been providing supportive services to individuals hurt by domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse while advocating for a community effort to end violence.
