October full moon, Hunter's Moon to peak Saturday: What it means

With Halloween right around the corner, it’s time to get extra spooky. Luckily, October’s full moon will peak this weekend. And you know what they say, a full moon is said to influence one’s behaviors and mood, perfect for those celebrating this fun holiday.

When is it?

According to Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Hunter’s Moon will peak at 4:24 p.m. EST on Saturday, Oct. 28. However, it will be visible for several nights following sunset.

Why is it called the Hunter's Moon?

Both the Harvest Moon, taking place on Sept. 29, and the Hunter’s Moon differ from other full moon names as they are tied to the fall equinox.

The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the fall equinox, typically occurring in either September or October. The 2023 equinox took place on Sept. 23, meaning it took the name Harvest Moon.

The Hunter’s Moon is the first full moon to occur after the Harvest Moon, typically occurring in October or November. It was given its name as it signaled to people to prepare for the upcoming winter by going hunting. Furthermore, animals were more easily visible as most crops were cleared around the time of the Harvest Moon.

How will the weather be during the peak?

According to the National Weather Service, Saturday will be mostly cloudy in the metro Detroit area with a high near 58 degrees and a chance of showers. In the evening, showers are likely at a low of around 46 degrees.
