Your letters to the editor for Sept. 3, 2023:

What's truly the 'big lie?'

Our nation has heard many falsehoods over the last several years, most of which we have heard from Donald Trump and his followers. It's sad for our nation that someone who was president, and wants to be president again, is so averse to speaking the truth.

Of course, what has become known as the "big lie" is his refusing to admit that he lost (yes, lost) the 2020 presidential election. It's disheartening that there is so much dishonesty from so many that want to emulate Mr. Trump in his distortion of the truth. We can wonder how many people know in their hearts that the election was legitimate and that Mr. Trump lost, but won't be truthful concerning the outcome.

Our democracy has stood for more than 250 years, due to, and through, blood, sweat and tears, and is now threatened by the lies of Mr. Trump and his allies, repeated time after time and proven to be false time after time.

Mr. Trump has belligerently and erroneously attacked organizations such as the Department of Justice, because the department is working to convict him of his lies, and he is not beyond threatening anyone, or any organization seeking the truth.

The Voting Rights Act that was enacted in 1965 serves to protect that right, one of our most sacred rights, benefitting many of our citizens. However, since Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, and continues to lie about the voting, many of his supporters, elected officials, and others, strive to restrict the rights of legitimate voters, showing that they don't respect our laws and disregard our freedom.

We know that Mr. Trump had responsibility concerning the Jan 6th attack on our capitol, which shows that his love and respect for our nation is minimal at best, and we can tell by his denial of the results of the 2020 presidential election that he has neither the dignity, decency, nor the back-bone to admit his election loss.

We should wonder why our Gov. Noem is so fascinated with Mr. Trump and his lies.

Let us be found in God's will

A house decided. Prayer that makes a difference. When we, we pray the words our, our Father which is in Heaven. Then in line comes forgive us, us our sins. As we, we forgive those also. What is it to pray forgiveness for sins I’ve not committed? Is it to remember love one to another. Christ who knew no sin prayed for us, us while he was on the cross, father forgive them, them. He had no sin yet prayed forgiveness for us. We see this example in Job sacrificing for others. The inter seeding of Moses for Israel, the bargaining of Abraham for Lot and Sodom and Gomorra. There are other examples of Interceders. Today there is the call go take your lamps and go out to meet Him. In this the hidden message is attitude of heart as we look for his coming. In prayer we find prayer for others. In us a request forgive us. This transcends division and differences. It is prayer to God, not man, government, church or group. It must come from the oil in our lamps to light the path we, we are to take. So let us, be found in God's will, through prayer in morning and weeping as though the sins we see in ourselves, and the sins of others be considered my repentance. For this is the obedience of the cross. Something we all need.

Push Thune, Rounds to protect CDC funding

Right now, Congress is working on legislation to fund government agencies, and I am very concerned about proposed cuts to cancer research, public health, and clean air programs. As South Dakota’s advocacy director for the American Lung Association, I know the importance of robust investments for lung health research, public health initiatives and programs to clean up air pollution. Personally, I am most concerned about proposed funding cuts to lung health research and public health funding at CDC and NIH. In fact, the funding bill from the House of Representatives would reduce research investments putting progress to finding new cures and treatments at risk; slash chronic disease prevention funding, making our nation sicker and further increase healthcare costs; and even eliminate a program that helps prevent kids from starting to smoke and vape. These cuts will further harm people struggling with lung cancer, COPD, and asthma. Congress must have a clear and sustained commitment to funding medical research and public health. Please join me and reach out to Senators Thune and Rounds to ask them to protect robust funding for CDC and NIH, and to support bills that invest in cancer research, lung health programs and clean air programs in Fiscal Year 2024.

Goodbye to a game show legend

I loved watching Bob Barker on "The Price Is Right." He was not only very funny, but also very handsome. At the end of every show, he wanted everyone to have their pets spayed or neutered. He was one of my favorite game show hosts. He was a legend.I also remembered him as host of the Tournament of Roses Parades and the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. We will remember Bob Barker as a game show legend always and forever.Bob Barker, RIP.

How to submit a letter to the editor:

Letters need to be roughly 300 to 500 words, and will need to include first and last name, address, city and title. Addresses won’t be publicized, of course, but it’s a way for us to make sure those who submit a letter are who they say they are.

Letters will run on Sundays in print and online as we receive them. There may be moments, however, when we don't have any as we work to solicit interest and actively rebuild this part of our coverage for readers.

You can submit those to News Director Shelly Conlon by emailing sconlon@argusleader.com or submit them through our online form here, which also is sent directly to the news director.
