Odessa suspect had criminal record: police

Investigators are combing through 15 different crime scenes in Odessa and Midland Texas, including the home where the suspect, Seth Aaron Ator, lived.

The 36-year-old had been fired from his truck driving job just hours before the massacre began Saturday. He also called the local police and the FBI to make rambling statements.

Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke confirmed Ator had a prior arrest record.

"We can't be specific about his criminal history, I can tell you the interactions that he's had with the Odessa police department have been of very minor incidents that would not have any impact on his ability to own a firearm."

At a prayer vigil Sunday evening, the Mayor of Odessa, Texas David Turner credited local law enforcement for stopping the carnage.

"The person was stopped, was because of a Midland police officer and an Odessa police officer. They rammed his car, stopped him and when he got out, they shot him dead and I thank them for their service."

Recovering from his wounds, Efe Obayagbona can't believe he's part of what he has seen on television.

"When stuff like this happens, I just say to myself, 'Oh, another shooting again?' It becomes a normal thing, like a normal thing."

The littlest shooting victim is back home already. Mother Kelby Davis thanked angels and off-duty parademics being nearby for saving the life of her 17-month-old.

"I'm grateful Anderson is here. I'm so thankful that we're not one of those families that's on the other side of this. And it makes you feel guilty almost, but that's why I just have to remind myself: God does not cause tragedies like this, but God is going to walk through all of us."

Campaigning in Iowa, former Vice President Joe Biden called the response by President Donald Trump and other Republicans, irrational.

"There is a solution - win. I don't see anything out there. Do you? I have seen nothing. The president has no intestinal fortitude to deal with this. He knows better. His instinct was to say, 'Yeah we are going to do something on background checks.' What is he doing? Come on. This is disgraceful. This is disgraceful what is happening."

President Trump said Sunday that background checks would not have prevented the shooting in Midland-Odessa nor the previous gun violence in El Paso, Texas.
