Odessa sweeps South Plains in WJCAC showdown games

ODESSA — Ivana Krajina scored 19 points and Odessa College knocked off South Plains College 61-46 Monday night, narrowing the Lady Texans' lead in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference basketball race to one game with one playing date remaining.

South Plains (17-9, 11-2) can win the title outright with a road victory Thursday at Midland College (11-16, 6-7). New Mexico Junior College (21-5, 10-3) can share the title with a home win Thursday against Clarendon College (24-5, 8-5) and a loss by South Plains.

Vitoria Carvalho scored 12 points for the Lady Texans, who lost for the second time in four games after starting conference play 9-0. Celia Sumbane had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

ODESSA — Dontrell Hewlett scored 18 points and No. 3 Odessa College clinched the Western Junior College Athletic Conference championship outright with a home victory against No. 22 South Plains College.

Dian Wright-Forde scored 16 points for Odessa (27-2, 14-1), and Kiree Huie added 10.

Ismail Habib led South Plains (22-7, 10-5) with 21 points, including a 3-point goal that narrowed the Texans' deficit to 65-61 with 4:32 left after they trailed 56-38 midway through the second half. Christian Coleman and Kalifa Sakho added 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Texans.

South Plains, alone in third place, closes the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Midland College (23-6, 9-6). The Texans have a one-game lead on Howard College (19-10, 9-6).

Wayland men 74

OKLAHOMA CITY — Wayland Baptist got 20 points apiece from Parrish Hewitt and R.J. Mason and rallied from a 17-point deficit with 11 1/2 minutes left to beat Oklahoma City University in the semifinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.

No. 2 seed Wayland (23-7) was set to face fifth-ranked No. 1 seed Langston (28-2) for the tournament championship on Tuesday night, a game that began after the A-J's print deadline. The two teams split in the regular season, each winning at home.

Dravon Clayton scored 23 points for Oklahoma City (17-13), which led 61-44. The Pioneers outscored the Stars 30-9 the rest of the way. Tedrick Wolfe had 10 points in the closing surge, Mason nine and Hewitt eight.

Wolfe finished with 13. Pioneers big man D'Michael Bellfield had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

LCU women's golf

SAN ANTONIO — Lubbock Christian University's Lily Griffin shot 7-over 79 in Tuesday's final round of the Rattler Invitational and finished tied for 22nd in the tournament host by Lone Star Conference rival St. Mary's.

Griffin, a junior from New Zealand, finished 54 holes at 21 over par. LCU's Prestley Hammond closed with a 6-over 78 and finished 24 over for 27th place. Aspen Escamilla with an 80 and Alexandra Escamilla with an 82 had the Lady Chaps' last two counting scores for the round. Kyra Schmuhl signed for an 89.

LCU finished sixth of seven teams at 108-over. West Texas A&M won the event at 23-over, followed by St. Mary's at 57-over, Arkansas-Fort Smith at 59-over and Texas A&M International at 62-over.

LCU track & field

Lubbock Christian University's Bryce Spencer and George Garcia both qualified for the NCAA Division II indoor track & field championships.

Spencer, a senior from Sundown, is the No. 12 seed in the weight throw with a season and career best of 64 feet, 6 1/2 inches. He won the Lone Star Conference title with a mark of 63-0 1/4.

Garcia, a freshman from El Paso Eastwood, won the Lone Star Conference title in the 400 meters in 47.29 seconds. He's ranked No. 13 in Division II.

The D-II indoor championships are scheduled for March 10-11 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
