ODOT construction projects for Richland, Crawford counties plentiful

Each spring, the Ohio Department of Transportation shifts its priority from snow and ice operations to construction and maintenance in the state's transportation system.

Motorists will soon be seeing orange barrels, road closures, bridge and culvert repairs and more, locally and across Ohio.

The construction program, just released to the media, outlines plans within ODOT District 3, which serves Richland, Crawford, Ashland, Erie, Huron, Lorain, Medina, and Wayne counties. Some road projects will begin next month and others will not start until 2024.

In Richland County, there will be numerous projects.

Bridge repairs are scheduled on U.S. 42 and Ohio 430 at the structure over Fleming Falls Creek, south of Fleming Falls Road; and Ohio 430 at the structure over Touby Run, just east of Home Road, and at the structure just east of North Willis Avenue. The projects will start in May and end in November. Cost of the project is $778,000. Traffic will be maintained at all times, ODOT said.

Culvert on Ohio 98 to be replaced

Contractors will do a culvert replacement on Ohio 98 between Ohio 598 and Baker Road, starting in May and ending in August. Project cost is $220,000. There will be a 30-day detour.

And a bridge replacement will begin in June and end in November on Ohio 96, just east of Ohio 603. Motorists will have to take a detour as the $2.5 million project is expected to have a 120-day road closure.

Another bridge repair is set to begin in July on Ohio 603 between Snake Road and Rome Greenwich Road, and end in November. The $1.4 million project will result in a 90-day detour, ODOT said.

Work is set for May 2024 to June 2024 on Ohio 95 for minor rehab, resurfacing from the Knox County line to the village of Butler's northern corporation limit. Traffic will be maintained at all times for the $2 million project.

And $385,000 worth of culvert replacements are on tap for Ohio 61 between Updyke Road and Ohio 98, and Ohio 598 between Dinninger Road and Henry Road. The work will begin in April 2024 and end in July 2024.

Detour planned during Ohio 39 bridge project

A signal replacement on Ohio 314 and Fourth Street, begun in August 2022, will wrap up in April (2023). The contractor is Greenwich Electric Inc., and the project cost is $235,724, with traffic to be maintained at all times.

Starting next month in April, motorists will have to take a different route when a bridge replacement on Ohio 39 between East Sixth Street and Lafayette Avenue in the city of Mansfield, gets underway. Completion is set for August on the $1.2 million project which is expected to impact traffic for 120-day closure. The project cost is $1.2 million and the contractor is Rietschlin Construction Inc.

Four ODOT projects are set for U.S. 30 including major rehabilitation from Ohio 309 to just east of the Fifth Avenue ramps which began in May 2020 and continues through May of 2023. Traffic will be maintained at all times on the $7 million project. The contractor is Shelly & Sands Inc.

U.S. 30 minor rehabilitation is set to begin in April and end in October with resurfacing from the Fifth Avenue interchange ramps to just past the Ashland County line. Kokosing Construction Company Inc. is the contractor on the $8.6 million project. Traffic will be maintained at all times.

Minor rehabilitation resurfacing and bridge maintenance along U.S. 30 is set from the Crawford County line to just west of Old Lincoln Way from May to September. The $5.9 million project will have traffic maintained at all times.

Crawford County ODOT projects

Work continues on Ohio 598 in the City of Galion through May. The safety improvement project, started in September 2021, will continue to May including widening and the addition of a turn lane on Ohio 598 from Carter Drive to Brandt Road. Rietschlin Construction is the contractor on the $4.5 million project.

Ohio 96 rehabilitation involves full depth reclamation from Ohio 98 to Ohio 602 and began in September 2022 and in May. Kokosing Construction Company Inc. is the contractor on the $3.5 million project. Traffic will be maintained at all times.

Resurfacing will get under way on Ohio 39 from south of Hilborn Avenue to just north of Hinesville North Road in Crawford County; in Richland County Ohio 39 from just west of Hinesville North Road to east of Funk Road; Ohio 96 from Ohio 39 to just west of Hines Road from April to August. Traffic will be maintained at all times and the contractor Kokosing Construction Inc. will do the $1.6 million project.

ODOT is doing Ohio 103 and Ohio 602 chip seal work August to October. Road work will be performed August to October on Ohio 103 from Ohio 4 to the village of New Washington east corporation limit to Baseline Road. And Ohio 602 from Ohio 19 to just north of Boyer Road, and Ohio 602 from south of Lower Leesville Road to Old Lincoln Highway. Traffic will be maintained at all times on the $1.2 million project.

From June to September, urban paving will be under way in the city of Galion and resurfacing in the village of Crestline and the village of Lexington. T

From May 2024 to August 2024, ODOT will do resurfacing along various major routes in Crawford County.

And from April 2024 to October 2024, U.S. 30 culvert preservation work will be done with a 30-day detour. Roads impacted include U.S. 30 between Crawford Wyandot Road and Marion-Melmore Road; between Marion-Melmore Road and Nevada Wynford Road; just west of Knauss Road; at the U.S. 30 eastbound exit ramp to Old Lincoln Highway (CR 330). There will be a 30-day detour.
