Of 139 new COVID cases in S'pore, 8 linked to new Westlite Juniper dorm cluster

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Tuesday (27 July) reported 139 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore, taking the country's total case count to 64,453.

There are 136 new locally transmitted infections, of whom eight are dormitory residents linked to a new cluster at Westlite Juniper Dormitory.

Of the 81 local cases who are linked, 36 are linked to the Jurong Fishery Port cluster while two are linked to the KTV cluster. The two clusters are now linked to 902 and 245 cases, respectively. Fifty-five local cases are unlinked.

Among the cases are three seniors above the age of 70 who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and are at risk of serious illness.

Also detected were three imported infections, of whom two were detected upon arrival here, while the remaining case developed the illness during their stay-home notice or isolation period.

Four new COVID-19 clusters were announced on Tuesday, including a nine-case cluster at Westlite Juniper Dormitory, bringing the total number of active clusters in Singapore to 39.

The new clusters include one linked to a cleaner at Punggol Primary School, which has four cases as well as one linked each to "Case 65695" and "Case 66259", each of which has three cases.

New cases were added to other existing clusters – six were added to the one at Samy’s Curry Restaurant, bringing the total linked cases to 28, while five were added to the Marina Bay Sands Casino cluster, bringing the total linked cases to 40.

Three new cases were also added to the "Case 64697" cluster, now linked to 73 cases. It is linked to residents at Block 639 Rowell Road of whom two had attended lessons at ComfortDelGro’s Ubi driving school and later tested positive for the virus. Other cases in the cluster include a canteen worker and a driving instructor, both staff members at the school.

The MOH said that number of new cases in the community has increased from 642 in the week before to 967 in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased from 46 in the week before to 182 in the past week.

The ministry added that the seven-day moving average number of all linked community cases and all unlinked community cases are 112.1 and 26 respectively.

21 require oxygen supplementation; 2 in ICU

A total of 62,617 cases in Singapore, or over 99 per cent of the overall total, have fully recovered from their infection and have been discharged from the hospital.

As of Tuesday, 545 cases are currently warded, most of whom are well and under observation.

There are currently 21 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation and two in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU). One among the 23 cases is fully vaccinated, but requires oxygen supplementation as she has underlying medical conditions, said the MOH.

Among them are also 13 seniors above 60 years, of whom 12 are completely unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, who have fallen very ill, it added.

Apart from the 37 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Over the last 28 days, 27 local cases required oxygen supplementation, were admitted to the ICU, or died. Of them, 14 are unvaccinated, 12 are partially vaccinated and one is fully vaccinated.

As of Monday, 7.26 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered under the national vaccination programme. Some 4.25 million have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Of some 3.12 million who have completed the full vaccination regimen, 120,638 are individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 and have received at least one dose while the remaining are those who have received two doses.

The MOH guidelines state that recovered individuals – who are likely to have a strong immune response against COVID-19 within the first six months after their infection – are recommended to receive a single dose of vaccine to further boost their immunity against the disease.

Those who have received the Sinovac's CoronaVac vaccine locally are not included in Singapore's national vaccination numbers. As of Monday, 89,047 doses of the China-made vaccine have been administered to 69,769 individuals.
