Video Transcript

- Now to breaking news. Gunmen opened fire on an off-duty Chicago police officer as he sat in his Jeep. The officer rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center. That's where CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot joins us live now. And Suzanne, that officer just got out of surgery.

SUZANNE LE MIGNOT: Erica, his surgeon just spoke to us just a short time ago. The officer shot in the stomach. She described his injuries like this, multiple injuries to his small and large bowel. She says that he is in fair condition, which is quite remarkable because she describes the injuries as life-threatening.

SUZANNE LE MIGNOT (VOICEOVER): The off-duty officer was at this light here at 89 and Stony, when two people in a black Nissan Altima started shooting directly at his vehicle. Sources say a rear seat passenger was among those firing a weapon.

- And we now have 15 rounds coming from 8919 South Stony Island in the middle of the street.

SUZANNE LE MIGNOT (VOICEOVER): Here you can see a bullet shattered the driver's side window of the off-duty officer's SUV.

DAVID BROWN: Three women officers, who were the first officers to arrive on the scene, they immediately loaded them up in their car and transported to the hospital. It's the hugs and tears that the family shared, the mother, grandmother, and the family shared with these three heroic women, who, in my opinion, likely saved his life.

- I have a victim at 89, the AutoZone. They just put the victim in the car.

SUZANNE LE MIGNOT (VOICEOVER): Chicago police superintendent, David Brown, says the circumstances surrounding the shooting involving the fourth district off-duty officer with four years on the job are still not clear.

DAVID BROWN: We heard some rumors about a carjacking. We don't know at this point. The circumstances suggest several different narratives of what this might be. It could be a misidentification. It could be road rage. It could be a carjacking. We just don't know. It's too early to tell.

SUZANNE LE MIGNOT (VOICEOVER): Police are now going over any video they can find in the area that may have captured the shooting.

DAVID BROWN: Trying to identify any either pod cameras, or private , cameras and/or witnesses in the area to see if anyone saw anything, a car, a license plate number, or could identify any offenders. That's the extent of what we know at this point. We just ask that you all keep our officer in your prayers.

SUZANNE LE MIGNOT: Now, sources tell me that the officer was alert and talking before surgery. Meantime, while he was off duty, he is the second Chicago police officer shot and injured in the past two days in the city. At University of Chicago Hospital, Suzanne Le Mignot, CBS 2 News.
