Off-duty FDNY EMT seriously hurt in Staten Island hit-run crash

An off-duty FDNY EMT was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash on Staten Island Thursday, police and fire officials said.

The 20-year-old EMT was climbing into her car on Locust Ave. near N Railroad Ave. in New Dorp about 12:35 p.m. when she was struck by a passing black Chevrolet sedan heading south on Locust, police said.

After the crash, the 29-year-old Chevrolet driver took off on foot, abandoning her car and her passenger, said cops.

Medics rushed the injured EMT to Staten Island University Hospital North in serious but stable condition.

A Fire Department spokesperson said the EMT suffered “traumatic injuries” and is “receiving expert care from the hospital staff at this time.”

“All members of FDNY EMS are pulling for our fellow EMT at this most difficult time and hoping for the most optimal outcome,” said Oren Barzilay, president of FDNY EMS union, Local 2507. “We are here and will stand together with her family as we work through this process.”

The FDNY did not release the EMT’s name as police investigate.

The driver, who was still sought late Thursday, is described as a female, 5-foot-5, blonde and wearing all black.
