Police tell FOX4 the deputy was out for a run when she saw the suspect in the act, allegedly breaking into cars and stealing items, and intervened.

“At that point, a suspect began shooting at our deputy, striking them,” Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Capt. Michael Kroening said.

The deputy is expected to be OK.

Kansas City, Kansas, police said the deputy was armed, but it’s unclear at this time if she shot back before the suspect drove off.

Investigators are looking through surveillance video and talking to witnesses to gather more details.

“I feel like this is a really safe area, so I wouldn’t expect that to happen,” one neighbor said.

Neighbors are now on edge as police work to find the person responsible.

“Knowing people are gonna go to those extremes to break into cars, which is sad,” one neighbor said. “It’s unfortunate that the deputy got hurt from it, but hopefully they’re OK.”
