Offering traditional makeup, educational courses, Vanity Girl Makeup Studio opens doors
When the pandemic disrupted work for two beauty counter makeup artists, they didn't let is phase them. Rather, the two friends decided to take a step in a new direction, opening their own makeup studio.
Marisol Orellana and Marisol Hernandez are the co-owners of Vanity Girl Makeup Studio, located at 420 W. Walnut Lawn St., Suite A, behind the Rapid Robert's on South Campbell Avenue.
The makeup studio is hosting a Galentines-themed grand opening on Saturday from 3-7 p.m. Guests may enjoy a 360-degree photo booth and vendor giveaways, along with food provided by the Numbah Juan Tacos food truck.
The two specialize in bridal, special event and photoshoot makeup. Additionally, Hernandez offers lash extensions and brow waxes and tints. Orellana also teaches makeup classes for beginner and advanced makeup artists.
For Orellana, education is an important part of the Vanity Girl brand.
"The whole concept of our studio is just to bring more education to people who love makeup and who want to learn more ... create a fun, girly environment because I don't feel like there's anything like this in Springfield," she said.
Orellana offers both one-on-one classes and master course sessions. One-on-one classes are two hours for $150. Students may bring in one model to work on or use their faces as learning canvases. All one-on-one classes are recorded for students' later reference.
Master course sessions are four hours long for $150 per person, with a maximum capacity of 10 people. Students receive a full brush kit and completion certificate. Orellana offers two master courses, Basics 101 and Advanced Artistry.
Orellana and Hernandez met about four and a half years ago as beauty counter makeup artists — Orellana at Sephora and Hernandez at Ulta Beauty. When commercial makeup counters closed due to the pandemic, the two began working closely as a bridal makeup team. And as business picked up, they began discussing the potential for a brick and mortar.
"I'm one of those, if you don't do it now, it's never going to happen," Orellana said about opening the studio.
Orellana has been in the makeup industry for about 18 years, working for companies like Macy's, Bobbi Brown, MAC, Chanel, Ulta and Sephora. Hernandez graduated from the Midwest Technical Institute's School of Cosmetology in 2019 and has worked at makeup counters in Ulta and Sephora.
Initially, Vanity Girl will operate on an appointment-only basis, both for makeup sessions and classes.
