Staff issued verbal orders for the attacking inmate to stop and fired a warning shot before firing additional rounds that hit the inmate.

The alleged attacker, identified as 33-year-old Albaro Amaral, received life-saving measures and was taken to a medical facility at the complex, where he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later.

The other inmate was taken to a medical facility outside of the complex and is in fair condition, CDCR officials said. No staff or other inmates were injured.

CDCR officials said a manufactured weapon was recovered from the site, and the officer who fired their Mini-14 rifle is on administrative leave.

Amaral was admitted to state prison from Santa Cruz County on Oct. 27, 2021, for a sentence of life with the possibility of parole for various charges, including first-degree murder, after already having two strikes, CDCR officials said.
