Officer guarding Highview home injured during Friday night thunderstorm

The home at 6213 Applegate Lane in the HIghview neighborhood is slated for an emergency demolition later after LMPD discovered hazardous materials, including potential explosives, in the home after executing a search warrant. The homeowner is currently in jail. Aug. 1, 2023.

A Louisville Metro Police officer was injured Friday night due to the thunderstorms while guarding the Applegate Lane home where police found homemade explosives in July, Louisville Metro Police said.

During a Friday night thunderstorm, a tree fell on top of an LMPD-marked car while an officer was guarding the Highview home, said Dwight Mitchell, LMPD spokesperson. He said "The officer was temporarily trapped inside of her cruiser" and was injured in the head and neck.

The officer was taken to a hospital in the area while she was alert and conscious. She was released from the hospital at 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Many people in the area lost power due to the storms and high school football games were moved to Saturday after the heavy rain cuased them to be canceled. Severe thunderstorm warnings were put in place for areas in Kentucky, including Lousivile, and Southern Indiana.
