A police officer was hospitalized on Sunday after engaging in a fight with a passenger after a car crash at Holmes Elementary School in Mesa.

According to Brandi George, a spokesperson with the Mesa Police Department, two officers were called around 11 a.m. after a car crashed into a school building located near South Horne and East Southern Avenue.

One of the officers spoke with the driver while a second officer spoke with the passenger. The passenger and the second officer then engaged in a physical fight in which the passenger was on top of the officer. George said it's unclear what led to the confrontation.

The first officer pulled the man off the second officer and held him down until more units arrived to take him into custody, police said.

The second officer was taken to a hospital where he was awaiting CAT scans as police said there was some concern he lost consciousness during the confrontation.

No further details were available.
