Ormond Beach police shoot woman who charged at them with a knife at beachfront park

ORMOND BEACH - City police officers shot a woman who charged at them armed with a knife Tuesday afternoon at a beachside park shortly after she repeatedly rammed a community service officer's car with her vehicle, officials said.

The shooting occurred at 3:38 p.m. at the Andy Romano Beachfront Park at 8:39 S. Atlantic Ave., according to a release from the city of Ormond Beach.

An Ormond Beach Police Department Community Service Officer (CSO) parked at the beachside park was approached by a woman, who started hitting the community officer's car with her bags and threatened him saying she had weapons with her, according to city spokeswoman Jenn Elston.

The woman then jumped on the hood of the community officer's car, jumped off, and got into her car. As she drove off, she repeatedly rammed the community officer's car, Elston said.

The community officer called for backup and two Ormond Beach police officers arrived on the scene. The woman got out of her car armed with a knife, Elston said.

Woman reportedly raises a knife above her head and charges at Ormond Beach officers and is shot twice, police say.

The woman charged toward the two officers holding the knife above her head and an officer fired his weapon at her. The woman continued to run toward the officers, who fired a second shot, Elston said.

The officers immediately began first aid on the woman while waiting for paramedics. The injured woman was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

No officers were injured. The two officers have been placed on administrative leave as is customary in police-involved shootings while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the incident, Elston said.
