DC Housing Authority officer shot in Navy Yard

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Members of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and other law enforcement officers were in the Navy Yard area Thursday morning after someone shot a D.C. Housing Authority (DCHA) officer in the 400 block of M St. SE.

DCHA Police Chief Michael Reese said shortly before 6 a.m., officers went to the area after they received word of unwanted guests, a man and a woman, at a senior living community.

Police asked the man to leave, but said he wouldn’t. Reese said officers tried to arrest him when a struggle took place. Reese said the man fired a gun on the second floor of the building, and officers chased him into the lobby. Reese said the man fired again and ran outside of the building. Officers continued to pursue him. Reese noted the man fired his gun again.

Adult, child fatally shot in Prince George’s County

One of the housing authority officers who was at the location on M Street SE was hit in the stomach. He was wearing a protective vest. Medics took the officer to the hospital.

Reese said the man ran to the 1300 block of 4th St. SE. Someone let police know where he was. A barricade situation followed. Officers took the man into custody in a private parking garage.

Police arrested the woman who was with the man at the senior living community. Reese said the charge against her was unlawful entry.

Charges against the man were pending.

Police told people in the area to shelter in place and make sure doors were locked after the shooting.
