Officers arrest two parolees, find unregistered gun in Chowchilla, police say

Two men were arrested and an unregistered firearm was recovered after officers responded to a suspicious subjects call in Chowchilla on Monday, according to authorities.

Officers responded just before 8 a.m. to the 200 block of Myer Drive for a report of two people in dark clothing allegedly trying to break into a vehicle, according to a Chowchilla Police Department news release. Officers patrolling the area located two men matching the description.

Police said that when an officer contacted the subjects, both men fled on foot through an apartment complex while discarding items they had on them. One of the men, identified as 26-year-old John Flores, was captured by police and found to be an active Northern gang member wanted for parole violations out of Merced County, according to authorities.

Police said the other man, later identified as 25-year-old Andrew Romero, ran into a nearby apartment. Announcements were given to the occupants inside the apartment as officers established a perimeter. A short time later, the occupants exited the apartment and police found Romero inside.

Authorities said both Flores and Romero were found to be on parole and Flores had two active felony warrants for his arrest. Officers investigating the path of the fleeing suspects reportedly located a loaded and unregistered fully automatic Glock 19 gun which police said had an extended 33-round magazine.

Officers also located an additional loaded 15-round magazine and a loaded 33-round magazine, according to the release.

Flores was arrested and booked into the Madera County Jail on the warrants as well as on suspicion of unlawful possession of ammunition, resisting, interfering with an officer and felon in possession of a firearm, according to jail records.
