Officers, deputies on leave after weekend shooting

(SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo.) — The officers and deputies involved in a shooting in Security-Widefield in the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 27 have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

According to CSPD, its agency was notified just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday of an incident that occurred about an hour prior in Security-Widefield. CSPD said the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) had initially responded to a report from one of its deputies that a man was walking south on Security Boulevard with a gun around 12:38 a.m.

Deputies and officers gave the suspect commands to drop the gun, but the suspect ignored them, CSPD said. The suspect then allegedly pointed the gun at law enforcement, and at least one EPSO deputy and FPD officer fired at the suspect.

Lifesaving efforts were made on the scene, but CSPD said the suspect was taken to the hospital where he later died. CSPD said no deputies, officers, or bystanders were injured during this incident. The suspect will be identified by the El Paso County Coroner.

The CSPD Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit has assumed the investigation, and CSPD will lead the investigation. The EPSO deputies and FPD officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave per their department policies, CSPD said. The deputies and officers have not been identified.
